The cheapest quote is not automatically the best value. Before choosing a contractor, put each quote into the same checklist and make sure the scope, materials and assumptions are comparable.
Check the scope
Make sure both quotes describe the same work. Confirm quantities, preparation, removal of old materials, access equipment and finishing work.
Check allowances and exclusions
Look for provisional sums, allowances and items marked as excluded. These can make a low headline price rise once the project starts.
Check payment terms and warranties
Compare the deposit, staged payments, completion payment and warranty terms. Ask what happens if the work is delayed or a defect appears after completion.
Compare like for like
Once every quote has been normalised, compare the total cost alongside the contractor credentials, insurance, experience and written scope. A slightly higher quote can be better value when it includes more work and clearer protection.
Frequently asked questions
Should I always choose the lowest quote?
No. Compare scope, materials, exclusions, payment terms, insurance, experience and warranties as well as the headline price.
